Walmart ‘is going to make it easier to shop online,’ says CEO
The chain said it would make it “easier to shop for the best online deals” with the opening of its new stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Walmart has been grappling with rising competition from online shopping giants such as Amazon and eBay.
The retailer recently said it was planning to invest more in its retail stores in an effort to compete more directly with the big-box stores.
Wal-Mart said the first stores it opened in 2017 will be in the Midwest, where it plans to focus on apparel and home goods, and in the Southeast and Pacific, where customers will buy clothes, shoes and accessories online.
The company also plans to open two stores in Atlanta and two in Florida.
Walmarts sales grew by 6.5 percent last year to $5.1 trillion, according to the company’s annual report.
The expansion of its stores is part of a larger effort to turn around the company.
The stock has risen as much as 8 percent since the company said last week it would begin accepting cash for orders.
